1. Brightness!
Change your brightness settings. This, surprisingly, helps a lot. Turn off auto brightness and turn down the brightness before each ride.
2. Prepare!
For the best experience, make sure the phone is fully charged before each ride. Especially if it is a nice day and you plan on making it a long ride.
3. Carry a charger!

This thing looks neat. It is supposed to be available November 2013. I think I will order one and test it out.
"The Atom"
Testing a new USB charger velcro'd to the top tube and charging the phone while I ride. Ended a 26 mile ride with 96%+ battery remaining on the phone and still some juice in the charger. I will run some more tests with it soon!
Finished a 50 mile ride with battery life to spare. Not much, but enough. Had the phone in standby for more than half the ride probably and no multitasking until the ride was over. Started almost fully charged.
I found this little gem on kickstarter http://kck.st/Ytlu92 - I'll make an update when it is delivered (hopefully by July 2013). It is less expensive than the other solar / battery pack kit that I found on there a while back and seems comparable (-5 - 10%). The other one didn't reach funding, so I didn't get to try it out, but this one looks like it has already passed the funding goal!
34 mile ride with 60% battery life to spare. Minimal multitasking - checked email a couple times, sent in a couple pictures and captured a bike rack. Low brightness, less than 50% and used the turn off the lights battery saving tip. Started fully charged 100%. Almost 4 hours.
Successfully recorded a 33 mile ride. About 2.5 hours. Set the phone brightness at about 50%. Ended the ride with about 10% battery life to spare.
